This is why we need the Uniform Civil Code.#UniformCivilCode

India is a secular, democratic republic, and we are proud to be Indians. This statement should be spoken with the patriotic fervor which such a just state deserves. But it is usually not usually spoken that way. Because India is not a completely secular, albeit a somewhat democratic republic. And hence, we are not able to be as proud of being Indians as we are supposed to be.

Triple talaq is the provision in Islamic Sharia law, that allows a husband to divorce his wife at any time and place of his choosing, by uttering “talaq” thrice. And that is considered normal. In places where “gender equality” is a term that is unheard of. If women are to be given equal rights, this practice needs to go, and for a good reason.

But it is still present in the society. So let us ask you this question: if you are to divorce your wife, what is the extent you can go to? You could go to the court and file a divorce, right? We wonder if murdering your wife even strikes you as a way to end a marriage.

What would you call a group of people who prefer such biased practices because it is better than the (obviously) “criminal ways of getting rid of her (wife) by murdering her” (sic)? Savage, right? Ladies and gentlemen, this is All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), for you.

Yes, Indians have the fundamental right to religion. Yes, we can practice our religious traditions and self-flagellate all we want. But now that the idea of having gender equality exists in the modern world, such practices cannot coexist. And the idea of a Uniform Civil Code can make this possible. But it is being opposed by the top Muslim clerics. Fortunately, Muslim women are rising against triple talaq and other such practices from their religion. And now, the government has asked the Supreme Court to consider banning the practice, and the Law Commission of India has brought forward a questionnaire that they want us to fill in order to understand the public sentiment better.
